Join us for a lively roundtable on interdisciplinary approaches to nineteenth-century material culture, sponsored by Crafting Communities and chaired by Denae Dyck (Texas State University). Speakers Susan Johnston (University of Regina), Andrea Korda (University of Alberta), Mary Elizabeth Leighton (University of Victoria), Vanessa Warne (University of Manitoba), and Elizabeth Womack (Penn State Brandywine) will highlight tangible examples from their classroom practices, including scrapbooking, moving panoramas, beadwork, and digital photography. Our conversation will reflect on how hands-on learning can re-shape research questions, create opportunities for new kinds of student engagement, and revitalize humanities pedagogy.
Speakers will use COVE Conferences to upload assignments, learning activities, and other materials related to their roundtable talks. We hope that this resource-sharing might be multi-directional (not just from us to audience members but also from audience members who might be engaged in similar pedagogical activities—the “Crafting in the Classroom” section of our website has been serving a similar function in the past, and we’re keen to generate new conversations).
